Robert Muir was born on the 5 July 1864 . He was educated at Hawick High School, Scottish Borders, Scotland; Teviot Grove Academy, Scottish Borders, and Edinburgh University, Scotland, where he graduated MA in 1884, MB ChB in 1888 and MD in 1890 , winning the Gold Medal for his thesis. In 1892, he was appointed Pathologist at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, a post he held for six years. He also became Senior Assistant to the Professor of Pathology at Edinburgh University in 1892 .
